Remember Jesus to endure-outline
2 Timothy 2:8-13
Remember Jesus so you may endure for salvation in him
1) Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David, as preached in my gospel, 2:8.
Paul is continuing his exhortation to Timothy to suffer for the gospel. How does his instruction to “remember Jesus, risen from the dead, the offspring of David” help Timothy to suffer for the gospel? What is the significance of Paul calling the gospel “MY gospel”?
2) for which I am suffering, bound with chains as a criminal. But the word of God is not bound! 2:9.
In light of Paul’s own suffering for the gospel, currently in his imprisonment as a serious criminal, what else does he say to affirm that his suffering is worth it?
3) Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory, 2:10.
How does “therefore” connect with what Paul just said? Who are “the elect”? How does 2 Timothy 1:9 help explain God’s choosing people to save? What does Paul believe the connection is between his “enduring everything for sake of the elect” and their obtaining “the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory”? Do you think this connection is confusing to human wisdom? If so, how should we respond? Do you think this teaching gives confidence in the worth of enduring suffering for the gospel?
4) The saying is trustworthy, for: If we have died with him, we will also live with him, 2:11.
Paul quotes this saying to encourage Timothy to endure and to describe what saving endurance is. What does this line of the saying mean? Compare Romans 6:8.
5) if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us, 2:12.
Revelation 22:5 makes clear that all who live on the new earth will reign with Christ. What does Paul say is the connection between enduring in faith and reigning with Christ? How does believers’ dying and living with Christ relate to the fact that we must endure to enter glory?
if we deny him, he also will deny us, 2:12b. Paul is saying what Jesus said in Matthew 10:33. What is the difference between a “Peter type of denial” versus a “Judas type of denial”?
6) if we are faithless, he remains faithful— for he cannot deny himself, 2:13.
Why is the fact that Christ cannot deny himself a reason that he remains faithful even when we are faithless? How does this encourage us to endure in faith in the gospel as we suffer?
