1 Timothy 2:8-15
Men and women must serve in their appropriate roles in the church in holiness

Paul is addressing some problems that are affecting the church when they meet together.
1) I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling, 2:8.
How does Paul exhort men to pray? What are the problems he is correcting?

2) likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works, 2:9-10.
What are the three ways Paul says women should adorn themselves with respectable clothing? What problem is he addressing?

3) Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness, I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet, 2:11-12.
How are women to learn when the word is being preached? What roles are women not to fill for the church? What does Paul mean by women being “quiet”?

4) For Adam was formed first, then Eve, and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor, 2:13-14.
How does Paul ground 2:11-12 in God’s design in creation and the pattern in Adam & Eve’s fall into sin?
How do you answer these objections to 2:11-12 teaching that women not have the lead teaching or ruling roles in the church?
Paul was simply accommodating to the culture of his day.
Paul was wrong to say that women shouldn’t be elders or lead teachers for the whole church.
Galatians 3:28 teaches that in Christ, differences in men’s and women’s roles have been done away with.
In Paul’s day women weren’t educated. Once that is corrected, the prohibition of 2:11-12 no longer applies.
Paul just meant that women were not to teach or lead in an authoritarian or dictatorial manner.
Paul was just writing to correct a specific problem in the Ephesian church.
Women can teach men if they are under the authority of the elders to do so.

5) Yet she will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control, 2:15.
Paul focuses on childbearing as the example of what women are to persevere in, because it is the most obvious example of the God-designed difference in role between men and women. What does Paul mean by saying women shall be saved through childbearing? (Hint: does a woman need to change her role to live out her salvation?)
